About the show

The Lowdown

It's 1954. The Academy Awards. Marlise Mattox is Hollywood's golden girl — right up until the moment she's arrested for murder, on the red carpet, in front of every flashbulb in Los Angeles. One arrest, one ruined gown, one career detonating in real time.

Marlise! is a new musical comedy that takes that gloriously lurid premise and runs with it: old-Hollywood shine, a framed leading lady, and songs built for a star who refuses to go quietly. Harrison Bryan and Katie Emerson lead a developmental production written by Jesse Ayala and Justino Tesoro, directed and choreographed by Joe Barros, with roots in BerkleeNYC and the BMI Lehman Engel workshop.

It's playing The Players Theatre in Greenwich Village, a 199-seat room where you're close enough to watch the mascara run. If your idea of a good night out is a wronged movie star, a murder she (probably) didn't commit, and a score that knows exactly how camp it is, this one's for you. Grab a seat before word gets out.

Won a seat to Marlise for the price of a deli lunch? Struck out a dozen times trying? Either way, the next New Yorker hitting refresh on the lottery wants to hear about it. Be the first on the board.
