About the show

The Lowdown

Long before Silicon Valley made a religion of inventing new things, Susan Glaspell wrote a heroine who wanted to grow something the world had never seen — and didn't much care who she broke to do it. The Verge, her strange, thrilling 1921 drama, arrives at The Public Theater's LuEsther Hall with Miriam Silverman in the lead as botanist Claire Archer.

When Claire's husband, her lover, and her closest confidant all turn up in her greenhouse looking for warmth in a snowstorm, things get combustible fast. Directed by Jesse Austrian, it's a century-old play that still feels ahead of its time — about a woman pushing against every boundary of her polite, well-bred life, wondering whether the only way past them is to blow them up.

Rarely revived and worth the trip downtown. First previews October 27.
