About the show

The Lowdown

Want your Scrooge with a side of actual history? Every holiday season the Merchant's House Museum on East 4th Street, a row house built in 1832 that still has its original furniture, turns its front parlor into the coziest theatre in Manhattan. One actor, playing Charles Dickens himself, tells A Christmas Carol to about 40 people on wooden folding chairs, lit the old-fashioned way.

The idea comes from Dickens's own reading tour. In 1867 he crossed America performing the story to packed halls, and this version is built around the reading he gave. John Kevin Jones, who has made this show a downtown tradition, and Vince Gatton alternate as Mr. Dickens. Summoners Ensemble Theatre presents it with the museum, and Dr. Rhonda Dodd directs.

It runs about 70 minutes, and some performances add a reception with Mr. Dickens afterward (separate ticket, very limited). The room is small, so the ghosts are close enough to make eye contact. Bah humbug is not an option.

Strictly limited engagement: November 24, 2026 through January 3, 2027 at 29 East 4th Street in NoHo. Season ticket holders get the good seats, so if you want to be in the front row when Marley rattles his chains, book early.
