The Lowdown
Laura Strausfeld adapts and directs Chekhov’s first staged play down to a brisk hundred minutes, and leans hard into the thing people forget about Chekhov — the man was funny. Watching a room full of people confidently misread each other is a comedy right up until it isn’t, and this production knows exactly where that line sits.
Sam Underwood takes the title role, with Ivory Aquino as Anna and Jordan Lage as Count Shabyelsky, backed by a company of eleven at Classic Stage Company’s Lynn F. Angelson Theater. A strictly limited run — August 17 through September 19, 2026. No intermission, so settle in.
