Full guide →When to go. Head straight out at curtain call. Two-show days are the worst bet at both performances — the cast rests through the matinee and is spent by the evening. A Sunday matinee is the best single bet, because it is a one-show day. In bad weather the barricades sometimes never go up at all.
Who comes out. Anywhere from nobody to most of the cast. Nobody can tell you in advance which three — not us, not the theatre. Treat any list that claims otherwise with suspicion.
What to bring. Tonight’s Playbill and a fine-tip Sharpie, held open to the page you want signed. Ask before you photograph anyone, and keep the pavement clear — it is a working door, not a red carpet.

Thirteen New York playwrights wrote this one. Not thirteen drafts, thirteen writers, passing the script along one scene at a time in the old parlour-game style where you only get to see the last line before you add yours. The result is called The Kick Inside, and it is exactly as strange as that method promises.
The story follows Alenka, a woman who gets thoroughly fed up with the way people talk to each other and starts taking language apart to see what is in there. Each scene hands her a new experiment. Along the way the play produces action sequences, dogs, hitmen, a possessed algorithm, and a city that answers back when spoken to. It runs one and a half acts, which is the correct length for a play with that many ideas in it.
It plays HERE Arts Center on Sixth Avenue, October 21 through November 7, 2026. HERE has been the room where downtown's odder swings land for decades, so this is very much the right address for it.
