About the show

The Lowdown

Helder Guimarães is a Portuguese immigrant, a storyteller, and a sleight-of-hand magician, and he has built an entire show around the puzzle of landing in America at 29 and trying to make a home out of it. The Hope Theory comes from the team behind Invisible Tango and The Present, played a sold-out run at the Geffen, and now sets up at New York City Center's Stage II. Frank Marshall directs. If you've seen Guimarães before you know the drill: the card tricks are ridiculous, but they're really just the delivery system for a warm story about figuring out where you belong. Previews begin in early September ahead of a mid-month opening. It's an intimate room, the magic happens a few feet from your face, and you will spend the subway ride home trying to reverse-engineer how he did any of it. You won't. That's the point.
