Stage Door
Full guide →When to go. Head straight out at curtain call. Two-show days are the worst bet at both performances — the cast rests through the matinee and is spent by the evening. A Sunday matinee is the best single bet, because it is a one-show day. In bad weather the barricades sometimes never go up at all.
Who comes out. Anywhere from nobody to most of the cast. Nobody can tell you in advance which three — not us, not the theatre. Treat any list that claims otherwise with suspicion.
What to bring. Tonight’s Playbill and a fine-tip Sharpie, held open to the page you want signed. Ask before you photograph anyone, and keep the pavement clear — it is a working door, not a red carpet.
Where to Buy Tickets
The Lowdown
The cell is a theatre inside a Chelsea townhouse on West 23rd Street, it seats fifty-five people, and it has spent years putting on work that bigger rooms would not risk. On October 28, 2026 it takes on The Charioteer.
The source is Mary Renault's 1953 novel, set in an English military hospital during the Second World War, where a wounded soldier finds himself choosing between two men and two entirely different ideas of how to live. It was a landmark book, published at a moment when publishing it at all took nerve, and it has never stopped finding new readers.
Fifty-five seats for a story built almost entirely out of what people cannot say out loud is close to ideal casting of a room. Every glance carries. Every pause is audible.
The closing date is still to be announced. Check back here for dates, tickets and any rush or lottery that turns up, and keep an eye on the cell's own site for the performance calendar.
