About the show

The Lowdown

Downtown at The Gym at Judson, Katie Cappiello is staging a fight over the most famous mother in history — and who gets to tell her story. The Body of Mary: A Play in Three Acts (of God) is a sharp, funny, unapologetically loud new play about reproduction, power, and the very old habit of putting words in a woman's mouth. Cappiello (the mind behind SLUT: The Play and Netflix's Grand Army) writes teenagers and grown-ups who talk like real people — which is to say they interrupt each other and mean it.

The cast — Gracie Conn, Ben Cook, Annalisa D'Aguilar, David Hull, Mary Jo Mecca, and Tracy Sallows — takes on a story that swings from comedy to gut-punch and back before you've finished your intermission drink. Judson Memorial Church has been a Greenwich Village home for boundary-pushing theater for decades, and this one fits right in.

Previews start September 8, with opening night September 15. If you like your theater with a pulse and an opinion, this show has both. Grab a seat while The Gym's flexible house still has one.
