About the show

The Lowdown

Two Tony favorites walk into a doomsday bunker. Karen Ziemba and Marc Kudisch headline the world premiere of Safe House at Theatre Row, and the setup is exactly the kind of gloriously chaotic family drama that makes a night out worth it. A father is quietly dying of a hereditary disease he hasn't told anyone about. With an election looming, he's convinced civil war is coming, so naturally he builds a bunker in the backyard to keep everyone safe. Then his estranged, very pregnant teenage daughter shows up at the door and the whole careful plan detonates.

Benjamin Viertel directs a cast that also includes Anna Roman, Grace Church, Justin Lee Miller, Glenn Seven Allen, and Julianna Layne. It's a dark comedy about the walls we build to protect the people we love, and how those same walls tend to trap us. Performances run at Theatre Row in Hell's Kitchen, a quick walk from Port Authority and the A/C/E. If you like your family reunions with a side of apocalypse prep, this one's got your name on the guest list. Grab a seat before the bunker fills up.

Won a seat to Safe House for the price of a deli lunch? Struck out a dozen times trying? Either way, the next New Yorker hitting refresh on the lottery wants to hear about it. Be the first on the board.
