About the show

The Lowdown

Anyone who's worked a restaurant knows the real drama happens in the back, between the rush and the side work. Masticate, a new dark comedy by Madison Fargo, drops you into exactly that world: a crew of restaurant workers wrestling with loneliness, ambition, and the kind of trauma that surfaces on a slow Tuesday — until a strange new waitress walks in and quietly rearranges everything.

It's sharp, it's a little unsettling, and it's got the specific, overheard-at-2 a.m. texture that makes back-of-house stories so good. Fargo's script leans into the comedy and the discomfort in equal measure, which is a hard trick to pull off and a great one to watch.

Masticate plays The Players Theatre in Greenwich Village, a 199-seat house where a dark comedy about people trapped together in one room lands right where it should. If you've ever bussed a table, closed a kitchen, or just liked a play with teeth, put this one on the list. Short run — three weeks and it's gone.

Won a seat to Masticate for the price of a deli lunch? Struck out a dozen times trying? Either way, the next New Yorker hitting refresh on the lottery wants to hear about it. Be the first on the board.
