About the show

The Lowdown

Ma-Yi Theater Company is kicking off its 2027 season with a world premiere musical: Magno Rubio: The Musical, at Theatre Three at Theatre Row on 42nd Street.

Ma-Yi has spent decades putting Asian American stories on New York stages, and Magno Rubio is one of its favorite characters. He first showed up in Carlos Bulosan's short story, then in Lonnie Carter's Obie-winning play The Romance of Magno Rubio, which Ma-Yi produced: a Filipino farmworker in Depression-era California who falls head over heels for a pen pal he has never met. Now he gets songs, which feels right for a guy whose heart is that much bigger than he is.

Performances begin February 20, 2027, with opening night February 28, for a limited run through March 30. Theatre Row keeps things close and cozy, so every seat is a good one. Grab a pal who loves an underdog romance and book it.
