Full guide →When to go. Head straight out at curtain call. Two-show days are the worst bet at both performances — the cast rests through the matinee and is spent by the evening. A Sunday matinee is the best single bet, because it is a one-show day. In bad weather the barricades sometimes never go up at all.
Who comes out. Anywhere from nobody to most of the cast. Nobody can tell you in advance which three — not us, not the theatre. Treat any list that claims otherwise with suspicion.
What to bring. Tonight’s Playbill and a fine-tip Sharpie, held open to the page you want signed. Ask before you photograph anyone, and keep the pavement clear — it is a working door, not a red carpet.

The Lowdown
A president loses his reelection and refuses to accept the results. No, this is not the news, it is a musical from 1933. Let 'Em Eat Cake is George and Ira Gershwin's sequel to Of Thee I Sing, the first musical ever to win the Pulitzer Prize, and Encores! is pulling it out of the vault at New York City Center.
The plot is gloriously unhinged: President Wintergreen gets voted out, a revolution breaks out powered by fashion, and the fate of the nation comes down to a baseball game with the Supreme Court. George S. Kaufman and Morrie Ryskind wrote the book, and the score is one of the Gershwins' most adventurous, including the love song "Mine."
Zack Winokur directs, in association with Opera Philadelphia. It took the second slot in the 2027 Encores! season after Hallelujah, Baby! was moved to a future season, so this is your rare chance to hear a Gershwin score almost nobody has heard live.
Encores! runs are short: March 17 to 28, 2027, on the City Center mainstage on West 55th Street. Subscribers grab the good seats first, so don't wait for the revolution to start.
