About the show

The Lowdown

Bruce Norris does not write comfortable plays, and Downstate may be his least comfortable yet. Four men convicted of sexual offenses against minors share a state-supervised group home in downstate Illinois. One day a man one of them harmed years earlier walks in with a list of things he needs said out loud. What follows is a long, bruising conversation, and a play that refuses to hand you the ending you walked in with.

It premiered at Steppenwolf in 2018, played London's National Theatre, and ran Off-Broadway at Playwrights Horizons in 2022. This is its Broadway bow, at the Booth, directed by Joe Mantello. The company is stacked: K. Todd Freeman and Francis Guinan return from the original cast, joined by Liza Colon-Zayas, Thomas Sadoski, Cassie Beck, Adrian Martinez, Al'Jaleel McGhee and Ivy Wolk.

Previews begin October 17, 2026, with opening night November 15. Bring someone you can argue with on the walk to the subway. You will need them.

Won a seat to Downstate for the price of a deli lunch? Struck out a dozen times trying? Either way, the next New Yorker hitting refresh on the lottery wants to hear about it. Be the first on the board.
