About the show

The Lowdown

The premise follows Mary and Martha Clarke, twin sisters who realized pretty quickly that the best way to survive 1893 Texas was to pass as white and become outlaws. It is a sharp, jagged piece of American history that resists the usual stage tropes. Angelica Chéri, a direct descendant of the sisters, wrote the book, which keeps the grit high and the sentimental nonsense low. With Stevie Walker-Webb directing, the industry expectations are heavy, but the creative team seems prepared for the scrutiny. We expect the staging to be lean and the music to cut through the noise of 48th Street. This is an essential watch for anyone tired of the usual jukebox fluff.
