About the show

The Lowdown

The premise is simple: two people go for a hike and end up in a purgatory that looks suspiciously like a 1940s musical. They are stuck in this town until they figure out if they actually like each other, which is a terrifying prospect for any couple. It parodies the earnest, over-the-top tropes of golden-age theater with enough precision to be clever, but it remains a pastiche at heart. The creative team leaned into the camp, and while the relentless optimism can feel grating if you have been riding the 4 train during rush hour, the craft is undeniable. Go if you want a light, polished meta-commentary on the genre. Skip it if you prefer your stage productions without a side of aggressive whimsy.

Our verdict

The Apple TV satire jumps to the stage and somehow gets even more delightful — a pitch-perfect love letter to Golden Age musicals with 12 Tony nominations to prove it. Eye-popping choreography, knowing gags, and enough corn-puddin' charm to win over both musical lovers and the people they drag along. Effervescent, silly, and a genuine good time.
