About the show

The Lowdown

The Illustrious Blacks have been throwing one of the better parties in New York for years, and now they have moved it into a theater and given it a plot. Beyond the Stardust is billed as an Afro-disco-space-punk extravaganza, which is either the most honest tagline of the season or a dare.

Twelve original songs, aerialists, dancers and go-go performers, and a set called the Stardust Club that you are invited onto rather than politely seated in front of. Niegel Smith — the Flea's artistic director, who knows exactly what that room can take — conceived it with the Illustrious Blacks and directs and choreographs. Oscar Escobedo built the club, Kate McGee lit it, DeShon Elem dressed it.

Tickets start at $25, which for a live album with acrobats is a bargain. It runs September 10 through October 18 at the Flea's Thomas Street home in Tribeca. Dress for a dance floor, not a matinee.
