Off-Broadway is opening a big one in a small room. The House of the Negro Insane arrives at 59E59 Theaters for a limited run this August, and it does not pull its punches.
The year is 1935. Attius has spent years inside Central State Hospital — one of only seven U.S. asylums built to confine Black patients — quietly building coffins for the people the world has already forgotten. Then two new patients arrive, and a door Attius sealed off long ago cracks open: the chance at a life beyond the walls.
It runs a taut 100 minutes with no intermission, so it hits hard and never lets go. Theater B is one of 59E59's smaller houses, which means every seat sits close to the action — exactly where you want to be for a play this raw.
Playing August 14 through September 6, 2026. Heads up: strong language, racial slurs, and violence — this one is built for grown-ups.
