Full guide →When to go. Head straight out at curtain call. Two-show days are the worst bet at both performances — the cast rests through the matinee and is spent by the evening. A Sunday matinee is the best single bet, because it is a one-show day. In bad weather the barricades sometimes never go up at all.
Who comes out. Anywhere from nobody to most of the cast. Nobody can tell you in advance which three — not us, not the theatre. Treat any list that claims otherwise with suspicion.
What to bring. Tonight’s Playbill and a fine-tip Sharpie, held open to the page you want signed. Ask before you photograph anyone, and keep the pavement clear — it is a working door, not a red carpet.

Picture this: an Upper West Side apartment, a pot of good coffee, and two people who agree on almost everything, right up until money enters the room. That is The Ask, Matthew Freeman's sharp little two-hander landing at Theater 555 on West 42nd Street this October.
Marilu Henner (yes, Taxi, and yes, she still remembers every day of her life) plays Greta, a longtime donor with progressive views and a checkbook to match. Shannon Purser (Stranger Things, Riverdale) makes her New York stage debut as Tanner, the young ACLU fundraiser sent uptown to close a very big gift. What starts as a polite pitch turns into a generational tug-of-war over who gets to define the cause, and who gets to pay for it.
Jessi D. Hill directs, and the whole thing runs a strictly limited engagement: previews start October 6, opening night is October 13, and the last performance is November 22. Theater 555 is a cozy 199-seat commercial house right across from the Port Authority side of 42nd, so there is not a bad seat in the place, and the subway is practically in the lobby.
If you like your plays talky, funny, and a little uncomfortable in the best way, put this one on the list. We will keep an eye out for rush and lottery offers as previews get closer.
