About the show

The Lowdown

August Wilson's Seven Guitars is coming to Lincoln Center Theater's Mitzi E. Newhouse Theater, and if you know Wilson, you know to bring your whole heart. Part of his ten-play Century Cycle, this one lands in 1940s Pittsburgh, where blues guitarist Floyd “Schoolboy” Barton is chasing one more shot — at the woman he loves, at a record deal, at a life bigger than the Hill District will allow.

His friends gather, the stories pour out, and what starts as a backyard hang slowly reveals itself as something far weightier. Ruben Santiago-Hudson, a Wilson interpreter of the highest order, directs a cast that includes Chanté Adams, Russell Hornsby, Michael Potts, and John Douglas Thompson.

Previews begin in November 2026 ahead of a late-month opening. It's music, memory, and the ache of dreams deferred, all in one of the most welcoming rooms in town. Save us a seat.
