About the show

The Lowdown

Director Saheem Ali is betting that the most tired story in the canon needs a linguistic split to feel alive. By having the leads whisper their intimacy in Spanish while the rest of the cast sticks to the English text, the production creates a private world that excludes the noise of the city. With LaChanze, Deirdre O’Connell, and Francis Jue anchoring the supporting roles, the performances will likely carry the weight even if the balcony scene feels familiar. It is a smart pivot for Shakespeare in the Park. We are curious if this specific choice justifies another go at the play, but given the talent involved, it is worth the trek across the Great Lawn.
