About the show

The Lowdown

The plot is essentially a fever dream set in 19th-century Montmartre, where a starving writer named Christian loses his mind over a club performer named Satine. It is Baz Luhrmann’s aesthetic dialed up to an exhausting volume, packed with a jukebox score that treats pop hits like musical furniture. The show mashes up everything from Lady Gaga to The Police, which is either a stroke of chaotic genius or a migraine waiting to happen depending on your tolerance for pop-chart nostalgia. Go if you want to be blinded by glitter and deafened by bass, but leave the cynicism at the door.

Our verdict

A jukebox spectacle that throws the entire pop songbook and a few tons of glitter at you and somehow makes it land. Ten Tonys in 2021, a set that turns the Hirschfeld into a Parisian fever dream, and mashups that shouldn't work but do. Thin on story, enormous on sensation — go for the maximalist sugar rush.

We're really excited for the show, but it really didn't pan out. The singing wasn't as good as expected, and the movie put it to shame. We wish this were better.
