About the show

The Lowdown

Told he had a gift for poetry but wasn't quite right to play the poet, Jacob Ming-Trent decided to argue the point — out loud, for about ninety minutes, at The Public. How Shakespeare Saved My Life is his one-man dive into the corners of his own youth, a search for home told with the Bard riding shotgun alongside a chorus of rappers, half-crazed preachers, and soulful poets.

Directed by Tony Taccone, it's a propulsive, funny, deeply felt show about the power of language to pull a person back from the edge. Ming-Trent is one of those performers who can turn on a dime from belly laugh to gut punch, and this is him working without a net.

The Public's Shiva Theater is small, which is exactly how you want a show this personal. First previews September 15.
