A short, special visit to Brooklyn. Hewa Rwanda – Letter to the Absent, Dorcy Rugamba's music-theater piece, plays BAM Fisher's Fishman Space for five performances only, October 7 to 11, 2026.
Rugamba lost much of his family in the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda, and this is his letter to them. Working with Senegalese musician Majnun, he weaves poetry, song and storytelling into what he calls a hymn to life. It is a piece about memory, culture and faith, and about two ways people get through the darkest stretches: love and making things.
That sounds heavy, and it is serious, but the music carries it, and audiences tend to leave lighter than they came in. It runs about 90 minutes with no intermission.
It is part of BAM's Next Wave season, and the Fishman Space is an intimate black box, so you are close enough to hear every breath between the songs.
Tickets start around $40 before BAM's fees. With a run this short, decide quickly.
