About the show

The Lowdown

It is August 1972, the city is melting, and two amateurs have turned a Brooklyn bank branch into a national spectacle. Stephen Adly Guirgis takes this true-crime disaster and strips it down to the bone. Jon Bernthal and Ebon Moss-Bachrach ditch their kitchen whites to play the desperate men behind the holdup, bringing a frantic energy that feels earned rather than forced. Rupert Goold keeps the tension tight, which is a relief given how easily this could have turned into a caricature. It is a loud, messy, and deeply claustrophobic portrait of a city on the edge. Go if you want to see what happens when the L train is delayed and the bank vault is empty.
