The Lowdown
Here's a New York fact they skipped in school: the Brooklyn Bridge was finished by a woman. When chief engineer Washington Roebling was sidelined by decompression sickness, his wife Emily Roebling stepped in — learning higher math, cable mechanics, and construction management on the fly — and carried the whole impossible project across the finish line. The men took the bows. History handed the credit to everyone but her.
Brooklyn Bridge sets that record straight, and it sings while doing it. Irondale's new musical follows Emily from reluctant stand-in to the one person who actually knew how the thing got built, one rivet and one blown deadline at a time. It's a story about ambition, marriage, and who gets remembered — staged a short walk from the bridge she made real.
The Space at Irondale in Fort Greene is exactly the room for it: brick, height, and a little grit. Bring someone who loves this city's under-told stories. You'll cross the bridge differently on the way home.
