Full guide →When to go. Head straight out at curtain call. Two-show days are the worst bet at both performances — the cast rests through the matinee and is spent by the evening. A Sunday matinee is the best single bet, because it is a one-show day. In bad weather the barricades sometimes never go up at all.
Who comes out. Anywhere from nobody to most of the cast. Nobody can tell you in advance which three — not us, not the theatre. Treat any list that claims otherwise with suspicion.
What to bring. Tonight’s Playbill and a fine-tip Sharpie, held open to the page you want signed. Ask before you photograph anyone, and keep the pavement clear — it is a working door, not a red carpet.
Where to Buy Tickets
The Lowdown
A son trying to build his own life, a father who cannot put down the one he lost.
Cary Gitter's world premiere follows Jake Gellert as he tries to step out from under Leo, his father — a Hungarian Jewish Holocaust survivor still carrying the people he could not save, and still owed a debt nobody can pay him. Jake wants a life of his own. He also wants to give the old man some peace. Those two projects turn out to be harder to run at once than he expected.
Joe Brancato directs the Penguin Rep production, which arrives at 59E59 after its Stony Point run. It goes 85 minutes with no intermission, which is the right shape for this kind of play — no interval to let the room off the hook.
Fair warning: it deals directly with the Holocaust and with PTSD. First Look performances on November 3 and 4 run $27, which is the cheapest seat you will find for a world premiere this fall.
