The Lowdown
The Pass, by British playwright John Donnelly, arrives at La MaMa’s Ellen Stewart Theatre for its US premiere. The play made its name in London for good reason: it is a three-scene gut-punch about ambition, closeted desire, and the price of the story you decide to tell about yourself. Sharp, funny in the way that hurts a little, and over before you have caught your breath.
La MaMa on East 4th Street has been the downtown home of exactly this kind of work since the sixties, and the 299-seat Ellen Stewart is the right room for a play that lives on close-up tension.
Previews begin July 30, opening night is August 3, and it closes September 4. Five weeks in the East Village, and then it is gone.
