The Lowdown
Set in the 19th-century American South, the show follows twelve interconnected lives — six Black characters, six white — whose relationships strain against the worlds they inherited. The score refuses to pick a lane, running through gospel, R&B, pop, rock, folk and straight-up opera. It played two sold-out engagements at Sadler’s Wells East in London before booking this New York premiere.
New York casting had not been announced as of the June announcement. The London company included Hall himself alongside Rachel Tucker and Marisha Wallace, so the bar is set somewhere near the ceiling.
