About the show

The Lowdown

The production tracks Bobby Darin’s sprint from street corner crooner to a man fighting his own mortality. Jeremy Jordan plays the lead with a frantic, desperate energy that makes the staging feel less like a jukebox musical and more like a high-stakes confession. It manages to avoid the saccharine traps of a typical biopic, focusing instead on a man who knew his time was short and decided to burn through it at full speed. Go if you enjoy high-caliber vocal performances and don’t mind the cramped seating of the venue. Skip it if you are looking for a lighthearted, plot-heavy narrative.

Our verdict

Jonathan Groff turns Circle in the Square into a swinging supper club and delivers one of the great star turns as Bobby Darin — six Tony nominations' worth of charisma. The jukebox-bio format is familiar, and critics said so, but Groff's wattage and the onstage big band push it well past the genre's usual ceiling. Go for the showman.
