About the show

The Lowdown

Into the Woods is a musical with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and book by James Lapine. The musical is a darkly comedic retelling of several Brothers Grimm fairy tales, including “Little Red Riding Hood,” “Cinderella,” “Jack and the Beanstalk,” and “Rapunzel,” and intertwines them with an original story about a baker and his wife who are trying to have a child, and the witch next door who has put a curse on them. Throughout the play, the characters confront their desires, fears and the consequences of their actions and their wish come true with a twist. Into the Woods explores themes of wishes, family, responsibility, and the consequences of actions, as well as the idea of “happily ever after” and the darker aspects of fairy tales. The play features memorable music, witty lyrics, and sharp storytelling, it’s a classic musical that continues to be popular with Broadway audiences.
