Into the Woods
Into the Woods is a musical with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and book by James Lapine. The musical is a darkly comedic retelling of several Brothers Grimm fairy tales, including “Little Red Riding Hood,” “Cinderella,” “Jack and the Beanstalk,” and “Rapunzel,” and intertwines them with an original story about a baker and his wife who are trying to have a child, and the witch next door who has put a curse on them. Throughout the play, the characters confront their desires, fears and the consequences of their actions and their wish come true with a twist. Into the Woods explores themes of wishes, family, responsibility, and the consequences of actions, as well as the idea of “happily ever after” and the darker aspects of fairy tales.
