The Lowdown
Tennessee Williams remains the patron saint of dysfunction, and this time around, Sam Gold is taking the helm. Gold has a habit of stripping away the varnish to find the raw nerves underneath, which is exactly what this play needs to avoid feeling like a dusty museum piece. Big Daddy is dying, the inheritance vultures are circling, and everyone is drinking enough bourbon to drown the truth. If the cast avoids the trap of southern-fried caricature, we might actually see the suffocating desperation that made this a classic in the first place. It is a heavy lift for any company, but we will be there to see if they survive the heat.
