The updated book by Doug Wright and Will Power recontextualizes Joe Hardy as a Black ballplayer navigating the weight of his father’s Negro Leagues legacy. It is a heavy, necessary layer to add to a show that previously leaned on campier tropes. Trujillo has a knack for movement, and with Lynn Ahrens adding lyrical polish, the creative team has the right pedigree to modernize this without losing the cynical, desperate heart of the original. We will see if the 21st-century adjustments hold up under the pressure of a Manhattan opening, but the intent behind the revision feels earned.
