Work of Devotion is Miranda Rose Hall’s raucous, profound, decidedly contemporary world premiere about women devoting themselves to beauty, wonder, and the glorious absurdity of being alive — while wearing wool in the Italian countryside, which is its own kind of devotion.
Hall, a finalist for the Susan Smith Blackburn Prize, has a gift for making the ancient feel like it was written about your group chat. Expect the medieval setting to land suspiciously close to home for anyone who has ever stared at the ceiling at 2am wondering whether their whole life needs a reorg.
Second Stage presents the world premiere at the Pershing Square Signature Center’s Irene Diamond Stage. Previews begin February 3, 2027, with opening night on February 22. Habit-forming, presumably.
