About the show

The Lowdown

The show takes the 1992 film and turns it into a high-octane spectacle of vanity and physical comedy. Madeline Ashton is a fading star holding onto her relevance by a thread, while Helen Sharp is the editor whose life she dismantled. They discover a potion for eternal youth that comes with the minor side effect of being technically dead. It is a cynical, campy look at our city’s obsession with aging and image. The production design captures the absurdity of the premise perfectly. Go if you like your humor dark and your musical numbers loud. It is a solid way to kill an evening, provided you can handle the ego.

Our verdict

The 1992 camp classic reborn as a knock-'em-dead Broadway comedy — and most critics agreed it improves on the film. Megan Hilty and Jennifer Simard are a dream comic pairing, the costumes won a Tony (Paul Tazewell, in his Oscar-and-Tony year), and the show led its season with 10 nominations and a viral fanbase. Gorgeous, wicked, and a genuine crowd-pleaser.
