About the show

The Lowdown

The plot is essentially a prequel to the Dorothy saga, focusing on the green-skinned Elphaba and her roommate Glinda before the flying monkeys showed up. It examines the friction between societal expectations and personal integrity, treating the friendship between these two women with genuine care. Schwartz’s score remains inescapable for a reason, though the sheer scale of the production can feel like a marathon if you aren’t ready for the belting. It stays relevant because it navigates themes of systemic corruption and institutional power with surprising nuance. Go for the spectacle, stay because the narrative weight actually lands. It is a solid way to kill three hours in the 50s.
