Stage Door
Full guide →When to go. Head straight out at curtain call. Two-show days are the worst bet at both performances — the cast rests through the matinee and is spent by the evening. A Sunday matinee is the best single bet, because it is a one-show day. In bad weather the barricades sometimes never go up at all.
Who comes out. Anywhere from nobody to most of the cast. Nobody can tell you in advance which three — not us, not the theatre. Treat any list that claims otherwise with suspicion.
What to bring. Tonight’s Playbill and a fine-tip Sharpie, held open to the page you want signed. Ask before you photograph anyone, and keep the pavement clear — it is a working door, not a red carpet.

The Lowdown
Six strangers sign up for a silent retreat in the woods. Nobody is allowed to talk. Everybody has something they badly need to say. Bess Wohl's Small Mouth Sounds was one of the great Off-Broadway word-of-mouth hits of the last decade, and it is built almost entirely out of what people do with their faces when their mouths are off-limits.
Now it moves to Broadway's Ethel Barrymore Theatre with a cast that reads like a fantasy draft: Julia Roberts, Sarah Paulson, Paul Rudd, Martin Freeman, Greta Lee and Isaac Powell, directed by Joe Mantello.
Previews begin February 18, 2027, with opening night March 18. A play about silence, starring six people you would happily listen to all night. Enjoy the irony; the box office certainly will.
