If you actually want to sit in a Broadway house this summer without paying rent-money prices, the trick is to enter the lotteries with real odds — and those are almost never the famous ones. Here’s where your chances are genuinely good right now.
The math nobody tells you
Your odds are simple: seats offered divided by people entering. A blockbuster might drop 25 lottery seats against several thousand entries. A newer or smaller show can offer the same number of seats to a tiny fraction of that crowd. Same five minutes of effort, a fraction of the competition. Once you see lotteries this way, you stop entering the ones everyone loses.
Where the odds are actually good
Weight your entries toward:
- Plays over musicals. Musicals draw the lottery crowds; plays quietly offer cheap seats to far fewer people.
- Off-Broadway lotteries on TodayTix. Smaller houses, smaller crowds, better odds — and often genuinely great theater.
- Newer titles still finding their audience, before word of mouth makes them a hot ticket.
- Weeknights. A Tuesday or Wednesday performance pulls a thinner lottery pool than a Saturday.

The lotteries to skip (or enter with zero expectations)
Wicked, Hamilton, The Lion King, and the season’s buzziest winners are beloved for a reason — and their lottery odds are the worst on the board. Enter them if it makes you happy, just don’t build your night around a long shot.
Rush is the secret weapon
If a show offers a rush instead of (or alongside) a lottery, it’s often your highest-percentage play: rush rewards effort, not luck. Show up early or log in the moment it opens and your odds beat a blind draw — though for the buzziest shows the rush line can still sell out before it reaches you. The move
Stack them. Enter five to eight lotteries a day, weighted toward smaller and newer shows, and keep a rush option as your backup. Do that consistently and you won’t just maybe see a show this summer — you’ll see a lot of them, cheap. That’s the whole game.
