Everybody piles into the same four lotteries. Wicked. Hamilton. Book of Mormon. Six. Tens of thousands of entries a night, a couple dozen seats, and the math does what the math does.
Meanwhile, twelve blocks of Off-Broadway theaters are running lotteries almost nobody enters. Same app. Same two-minute form. A fraction of the competition. And in one case, a $20 ticket.
I have been entering these for years and I win them constantly, which is less a brag than an indictment of how few people bother. Here is the whole board.
The $20 one nobody knows about
Katsura Sunshine’s Rakugo at New World Stages runs a $20 digital lottery through Telecharge, fees included. Twenty dollars. For a full evening of Japanese comic storytelling performed in English by a Canadian guy in a kimono who is, improbably, one of the two foreigners in history to train as a professional rakugo storyteller.
It is a strange, warm, very funny hour and change. It is also the single cheapest lottery ticket in Manhattan right now, and the entry pool is a rounding error next to anything with a Times Square marquee. Enter at rush.telecharge.com.
The Theater Center trio: three lotteries, one building
The Theater Center at 210 W 50th houses a cluster of long-running comedies that all run $39 Lucky Seat lotteries plus $35 TodayTix rush at 9 AM:
- Perfect Crime — running since 1987. Not a typo. It is the longest-running play in New York history, Catherine Russell has performed it something like 14,000 times, and it also carries a $35 student rush at the box office at 10 AM.
- Singfeld! A Musical About Nothing — a Seinfeld musical parody. Exactly as advertised.
- Friends! The Musical Parody — same idea, different sitcom, plus a same-day rush line at the Jerry Orbach box office if you would rather just walk up.
Three separate lotteries in one address means three separate entries every day, and if you win two you have a problem most people would like to have. All three run through Lucky Seat, so it is one account and about ninety seconds of your morning.
The Play That Goes Wrong runs its own lottery, and the deadline will get you
The Play That Goes Wrong at New World Stages does $35 digital lottery seats through its own site, not through any of the big platforms. Entry opens at 12:00 AM and closes at 3:00 PM two days before the performance.
Read that again, because it is the whole trick. This is not a day-of lottery. If you are standing outside the theater on a Saturday afternoon deciding what to see that night, you missed it on Thursday. Set a recurring reminder or you will keep missing it forever.
Worth the trouble: it is a farce about a disastrous amateur murder mystery, the set actively fights the cast, and it is the rare comedy that works for a ten-year-old and a seventy-year-old in the same row.

And the rush-only shows, which are the real sleeper
Some of the best Off-Broadway right now skips the lottery entirely and just does rush, which means no waiting on a notification at all. You buy, you go:
- The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee — New World Stages
- A Walk on the Moon — Laura Pels Theatre, closes August 22
- Birthright — MCC’s Newman Mills Theater, closes August 23
- Label•less — The Duke on 42nd Street, closes August 29
- Heated Rivalry: The Unauthorized Musical — 6th Floor Theater, closes September 7
Four of those five close inside six weeks. Closing dates move, and they usually move earlier, so treat them as soft.
Why the odds are actually better down here
Three reasons, none of them complicated.
Nobody is looking. A tourist plans one Broadway show. They enter the lottery for that show. They have never heard of Rakugo and they are not going to Dumbo.
The houses are small, so the giveaway is proportionally large. Twenty lottery seats out of a 199-seat house is a completely different ratio than twenty out of 1,900.
Long-running shows have quiet Tuesdays. Perfect Crime has been open since the Reagan administration. There is no opening-week frenzy left to compete with.
How to actually work this board
Set up three accounts once — Lucky Seat, TodayTix, and Telecharge — with a card saved on each. Then enter the Off-Broadway shows on the same pass you make for the big Broadway ones. It adds maybe three minutes.
My honest advice: keep entering Wicked, because someone has to win it and it may as well be you. But stack five Off-Broadway entries underneath it and you go from “I never win these” to seeing a show most months.
